| Aragonese languages law: still pending Marcel·lí Iglesias (PSOE party), President of the Autonomous Community of Aragon, in Spain, has promised to present and pass the Aragonese languages law during the year 2008 to regulate the use and promotion of Catalan and Aragonese in Aragon. It is not the first time that Mr. Iglesias, who is a Catalan speaker himself, states this old promise in the media, and it has never been kept. Acknowledgement and promotion under a law is quite important for the Catalan and Aragonese languages in Aragon, as the current Statute of Autonomy of Aragon does not mention which are the languages of Aragon (i.e., Aragonese, Catalan and Castilian). The minority languages speakers’ linguistic rights in this Autonomous Community of Spain are not being respected at the moment, as they are legally unprotected.
